Machines arrived on the Millrace riverbank this month, and the first cut into the slope is done.
The opening phase regrades 1.8 acres into a lower flood bench, restoring the floodplain the river lost to decades of fill. Once the earthwork settles over the summer, the limestone amphitheatre terraces follow, then prairie planting in the autumn window.
"Grading is the part nobody photographs and everything depends on," said Suyin Park, principal on the project. "Get the elevations right and the plants do the rest."
The park is expected to open to the neighbourhood the following spring, with a three-year ecological monitoring programme starting the same season.
